What is an ecological house characterized by?
Environmentally friendly houses are increasingly being chosen for real estate by society. No wonder, because ecological houses are based on modern solutions and renewable energy sources, and so – such houses offer many advantages. Which buildings can legally be called ecological? What are ecological houses made of and how do they differ from traditional residential buildings? What should you consider when building an eco-home? We’ll answer these and other questions in today’s post.
What is an ecological house?
According to the regulations of the Ministry of Environment, it can be called an ecological house a building built with ecological methods and materials used in it that reduce the operating costs of the building by up to 50-80% compared to traditional buildings.
Simply put, an ecological house is a building with a low energy consumption, based on eg energy-saving and self-generating devices. In addition, natural materials and renewable resources available in a particular region are used to build an ecological home. Usually, in such a building, installations are installed that use renewable energy sources (for example, from the sun – in the case of a photovoltaic installation).
What are ecological houses made of?
The materials used to build ecological houses must be sustainable and biodegradable. In order to maintain a construction process that is as ecological as possible, it pays to choose materials that are locally available and that are processed as little as possible. There are several technologies for the construction of eco-houses, and the most popular are the use of wooden logs, clay and straw or ready-made skeletons.
Wooden houses are very popular not only in southern Poland, but also throughout the country. Their unique appearance is reminiscent of a rural atmosphere and the use of sustainable wooden logs ensures safety and a pleasant microclimate for the household.

In summer the building is pleasantly cool and in winter the house “retains” heat, which means that heating costs are much lower than in traditional houses. What are the differences between an ecological house and a traditional house?
Although it is also possible in traditional houses to use installations that use renewable energy sources, the way the buildings are built is usually not ecological. Usually concrete and bricks are used to build a house, and the roof is usually covered with the popular steel roof tiles. In ecological houses, the basic building material is one that has no significant impact on the environment.
In addition, usually with traditional homes, the designs are drawn up in such a way that they meet the expectations of the client, without paying much attention to, for example, the position of the sun during the day. In ecological homes, the design is set up in such a way that the fruits of nature can always be reaped (for example in the form of the amount of light).
In an eco house, bedrooms and kitchens are usually designed on the east side, terraces on the west side and utility rooms on the north side. On the south side there is usually a living room or a dining room. This is especially important in the case of self-generation of electricity and the desire to save costs associated with lighting the house.
Ecological house – features and benefits
The ecological house is mainly made of environmentally friendly materials. The construction is usually made of locally available products made from renewable raw materials and the finish is made of wood, clay or stone. In addition, the construction process itself takes much shorter than with traditional houses – usually about half a year.
A building adapted to energy saving and self-generation can be called an ecological house. It focuses on good interior insulation to minimize heat loss and on the correct layout of rooms in relation to the incidence of sunlight. If it is necessary to heat the house, raw materials such as biomass, eco pea coal or wood are usually used.

Well, you should know that building such a building involves a similar amount of work as in the case of building a traditional house. What does an ecological house cost?
The price of an ecological house mainly depends on the size, design and materials used. On average, the price in the case of a log cabin is around PLN 2,000 per m². A mud house, in turn, can cost about PLN 900 per square meter. The final price is also influenced by the use of specific equipment and installations. However, it is worth noting that, for example, in the case of the installation of photovoltaic installations, you can obtain financing, which is provided by the photovoltaic micro-installation subsidy program. Then you can get a partial refund for installing this type of installation.
Installations in an ecological house
In addition to photovoltaic installations, one of the most commonly used installations is the so-called recuperation. It is responsible for maintaining high air quality in the home while minimizing energy losses. The recuperator heats the air flowing to the rooms, which in turn reduces heating costs by up to 30%.
Another commonly used solution is water recuperation, which consists of recovering heat from the water that is discharged into the sewage system. The energy from the flowing water is then used to heat subsequent flows. In addition, household members often decide to install a home sewage treatment plant, where the wastewater is neutralized with a biological deposit without having to dispose of waste.
It is worth noting that collecting rainwater is also an ecological solution. It is enough to place a water tank in the garden, which can then be used to water plants or wash a car, for example. Another solution in an ecological house is to install energy-saving lamps (for example with LED lamps or with motion sensors).
The main goal of building an ecological house is to save energy and live in harmony with nature.
