The project “Microgrids as a key element of sustainable development for Zakłady Komunikacji Miejskiej” earned Schneider Electric the title of leader of energy transformation. The competition to select leaders in this field was organized as a continuation of the Polish Climate Congress under the auspices of the European Commission and the Ministry of Climate and Environment.

Today, the issue of effective energy management and the resulting sustainable development is a huge challenge for companies in every industry. These issues are particularly important for municipal transportation companies looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint, including: through investments in electromobility.

Energy management and sustainable development programs enable them to reduce energy costs, reduce the risk of shortage through partial independence from third-party suppliers and minimize the environmental impact of their operations. Therefore, the urban infrastructure project presented by Schneider Electric was appreciated by the competition jury, which included representatives from NCBiR, KAPE, BOŚ, DLA Piper, Budimex, Multibud and BGK.

– The implementation of micro-grid projects in Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacyjne is particularly beneficial in relation to the introduction of electric buses in the current fleet, also with hydrogen, which involves a significant change in the local energy infrastructure – notes Jacek Parys op, director of the Power Distribution Division at Schneider Electric. – We read the fact that the jury indicated the project submitted by us as a clear signal that any modernization or expansion of the infrastructure owned by such entities should now not only take into account the issue of obtaining green energy from renewable sources, but also with an efficient system that allows to manage as effectively as possible the entire infrastructure used by such entities for this purpose.

The use of power management systems when building a microgrid is crucial to optimize the operation of distributed devices that are part of such a network and different types of loads, thus strengthening the stability of the local network structure.

– The awarded project is based on the implementation of a hardware and software platform that includes the entire range of Schneider Electric products, as well as products from other companies, adapted to the requirements of a particular investment. The key solution that integrates all of these elements is the EcoStruxure™ Microgrid Advisor software platform, which manages distributed energy resources on the one hand and supports the charging infrastructure of the electric bus fleet on the other, explains Krzysztof Burek, product applications leader for energy security automation at Schneider Electric.

The EcoStruxure™ Microgrid Advisor (EMA) platform is a cloud-based IT tool. It uses advanced prediction algorithms with artificial intelligence support. Using this tool reduces CO2 emissions and ensures the reliability of power supply from the available power generating resources for different operating modes of the microgrid. By offering EMA, Schneider Electric enables better management of energy costs, which become more predictable and optimized over time. The architecture of the EMA solution consists of two main parts: the cloud server and the EMA controller. The EMA server is a cloud platform based on Microsoft Azure, which is responsible for real-time data acquisition, historical data storage, and forecasting and planning the operation of distributed energy resources.

The platform also provides an advanced Software as a Service (SaaS) solution based on the HMI web browser to operate and configure the implemented solution and various application cases. The main function of the EMA solution is remote visualization of the power system, forecasting green energy production for own needs, cost optimization, maintaining power continuity and network parameters, and managing the flexibility and efficiency of distributed energy sources.
