When the project to postpone the local elections is finally presented, consultations will take place with President Andrzej Duda, government spokesman Piotr Müller said on Wednesday.

The government spokesman was asked at a press conference on Wednesday about the project regarding the postponement of local elections and possible consultations with President Andrzej Duda.† The idea of postponing the municipal elections from the fall of 2023 to the spring of 2024 was voiced by PiS politicians. Last week, PiS Secretary General Krzysztof Sobolewski said this possibility is still valid.

“There is no bill yet. Therefore, as we said, we are discussing the issue of changes, making the timing of local elections more flexible, because it is difficult to organize elections at the same time when we have different election commissions, when financial limits of different election campaigns are accounted for “- said he Muller.

He added that in the Polish legal system, the electoral law “regulates very scrupulously the spending on the election campaign, ie every candidate, every election commission has a specific limit on spending that should not be exceeded.” “There is transparency in the financing of election campaigns, so the organization of two election campaigns at the same time means that the transparency of these activities, for which money is spent, be it a local government campaign or a parliamentary campaign, specific organizational challenges and can also lead to abuse.” – he noted.

Müller stressed that local governments have been arguing for years to hold local elections on a different date, “if only because of the planning of local government budgets.” “This is also one of the principles that is taken into account in this aspect” – he added.

He assured that “if such a project is finally presented, appropriate consultations with the president will take place”. “It is known that the head of state ultimately decides whether to sign a particular bill or not, so of course such consultations would continue here,” the government spokesman said.

Municipal elections are scheduled for autumn 2023 due to the fact that in 2018 the term of office of local authorities was extended from 4 to 5 years (the last municipal elections took place on 21 October 2018). At the same time, autumn 2023 will mark the constitutional date of the parliamentary elections (the last one took place on October 13, 2019).

Fogiel: Motion has been tabled in the Sejm on the ratification of Sweden and Finland’s accession to NATO

Fogiel said at a press conference in the Sejm that the agenda of the Sejm – which begins its two-day session on Wednesday – is likely to be expanded.

“Of the new items that should be on the agenda, we can confirm that the application regarding the ratification of Finland and Sweden’s membership in NATO has been submitted. Soon it will be discussed verbatim by the Presidium of the Sejm and the Seniors’ Convention.” – said the PiS spokesperson.

“There is full political will on our part to address it at this Seym session and for the Seym to consider the matter, I think there will be no problem with this,” he added.

NATO ambassadors signed Finland and Sweden’s accession protocols on Tuesday at the Alliance headquarters in Brussels in the presence of Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto and the head of Swedish diplomacy, Ann Linde.

For Sweden and Finland to join NATO, such a decision must be ratified by all NATO member states.

In Poland, the ratification process requires parliament to pass a special law authorizing the president’s ratification of the protocol to the North Atlantic Treaty. Such an act is adopted by a simple majority vote in the presence of half of the legal number of alternates. The bill is then discussed by the Senate and signed by the president. (DAD)
