A summer driver, so a Sunday driver over a longer distance

Have you been drinking Don’t eat.

The first problem is alcohol consumption. It’s not even about driving with alcohol. Even drinking alcohol the day before can be a problem. Even if alcohol is no longer detectable in our body, that doesn’t mean it won’t change. Depending on the driver’s aptitude, he may experience fatigue, drowsiness or slow movements.

Therefore, it is better to limit alcohol consumption the day before the trip. More tips for drivers can be found on the gazeta.pl homepage.

Haven’t you been drinking? That is bad..

While the question is a bit perverse, the driver actually has to drink. It only concerns mineral water and isotonic liquids. According to doctors, at high temperatures, a person should drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day. It is difficult to determine exactly what amount of fluids are needed because each person’s metabolism is different. Even the same person on different days with a similar temperature needs a different dose of moisture. It depends on physical and mental predisposition (eg how long he stayed in a sunny place) and on the conditions in which he stays (eg acoustic and thermal comfort).

It follows that the body of a tired, nervous person who drives a car with damaged air conditioning will react differently than a person who is rested and drives a new car with air conditioning.

Fluid dosing is also important. You should drink small amounts every now and then, rather than replacing a large amount of liquid in one sitting. Doctors indicate that the best dose is about half a liter per hour. We are not allowed to drink carbonated drinks while travelling. The most suitable drink for travel is still mineral water or an isotonic drink for athletes.

Finally, coffee is worth mentioning. The caffeine contained in it raises blood pressure and in fact one feels energized and full of energy for a while. However, how long this situation lasts depends on our predisposition. Sometimes it takes a few tens of minutes, but sometimes it takes much less. In the latter case, it is not worth grabbing another cup of coffee, but it is better to stop for ten minutes and go for a walk or exercise outside. If that doesn’t help, we should take a nap.

It is important that coffee is a diuretic and after drinking it, the kidneys always work intensively. As a result, blood flows from the head and nourishes this organ, weakening the work of the brain. This is why many tired coffee drinkers feel sleepy after a while.

Gluttony, or Sin While Traveling

Eating while traveling is the biggest mistake most drivers make. If they stop at a restaurant at lunchtime for a lavish, nutritious dinner, then…they are at risk for trouble.

A motorist who will be driving for the next few hours should only eat an easily digestible meal. The Mediterranean diet is ideal in this case, ie fish, poultry, vegetables and fruits.

It seems obvious to most people because of the even sitting position and the resulting pressure in the abdomen. However, when asked about it, the doctors said what’s more important is our body’s response that occurs after eating a meal.

When digesting food, the stomach is supplied with more blood and therefore the head is supplied with less blood. As a result, there is a phenomenon of drowsiness. In the case of high temperatures, this phenomenon intensifies and the best solution is … the siesta used by southerners.

Therefore, in the case of the driver on a journey, it is always better to eat a light meal twice than a hearty dinner once. In addition, it is worth having snacks such as bananas, apples or kabanos on hand.

Where to eat

Unfortunately, it is difficult to convince anyone to visit a special place here. However, there is one rule worth following. Where many trucks are in the parking lot, there is certainly good service and fresh food. Professional drivers never go back where it is expensive, and eating a meal brings problems.

Before you go on vacation

The instructors of the Skoda Driving School drew our attention to another important aspect that is completely overlooked by drivers: exceeding the GVM.

Exceeding the gross vehicle weight (GVM) is most often associated with trucks, but this problem also applies to passenger cars. The consequences of overloading the vehicle have a significant impact on behavior and our safety, therefore, without exception, we must be careful when stacking the luggage and ensure the correct weight. Information about the permissible total weight can be found in the registration certificate – permissible total weight – item marked with the code – F.2.

As the instructors of the Skoda Safe Driving School emphasize, exceeding this parameter has negative consequences and is particularly dangerous. The effects are:

  • Increasing the braking distance – increasing the weight of the vehicle reduces its ability to react in emergency situations, which could lead to an accident. A loaded car needs more space to stop. In addition, drivers may not be aware of the extended response of the vehicle and therefore the risk of participating in the hazardous event is greater.
  • Unusual behavior on the road – an overloaded car, incorrectly loaded with an asymmetric load, in lane change situations or sudden bends can lead to skidding or even overturning. In addition to complying with the loading limits, it is very important to properly arrange your luggage.
  • Tire damage – in extreme cases there is a risk of damage. An overloaded car will cause the tires to heat up faster and hitting an obstacle in the road can cause the shoulder or sidewall to burst.

In addition to not overloading the vehicle, we must secure the luggage properly. During driving and manoeuvring, poorly secured luggage can shift and lead to a change in the center of gravity and thus a change in the track. We must also remember that the load does not impede the driving of the vehicle and does not cover the visibility of lights, number plates and direction indicators

– explains Radosław Jaskulski, Instructor Auto ŠKODA School. Changing the weight of the vehicle also affects the proper functioning of the tires. We must not forget that tire pressure increases with the number of people in the car, ie we have to inflate the wheels. Information about the correct pressure values can be found in the vehicle manual or in the car (usually on the driver’s door, near the fuel filler, in the glove compartment).

Changing the weight of the car also affects the lighting and illumination of the road. The headlamps must be adjusted according to the load of the vehicle.

With older cars you have to do it yourself and with modern cars it is automatically arranged. Nevertheless, in both cases, at least once a year, we must check the correctness of their settings at a diagnostic station or in a service center.

So driving on the road with proper nutritional principles ensures a smooth journey to the resting place. Correct loading of the car is necessary, whether you arrive on holiday or at the campsite, but also during the transport of materials, for a holiday renovation at home.
