<p><strong>Summer is just around the corner, and with it a heat wave, which has a negative effect on the health and well-being of residents of large cities. Wałbrzych is the first Polish city to participate in an ecological project to ensure their safety at that time. Paweł Binkiewicz from the company Lemitor Ochrony Środowiska encourages other cities to join the project.</strong></p>
<p>LIFE Tree Check is a project that covers several cities in Central and Eastern Europe. The starting point is to adapt cities to the occurring climate change. The project is helping local authorities to make cities a welcoming place for residents – especially in summer when temperatures reach record levels.</p>
<p>Due to the densely built-up area, the fabric of the site is sensitive to changes in atmospheric conditions resulting from global warming. Heat waves, severe storms and downpours and gusts of wind are becoming more common. The deviations that occur are especially dangerous in summer. High temperatures maintained for at least 3 days mean that residents are deprived of the opportunity to rest from thermal stress, which threatens their health and life.</p>
<p>One of the negative effects of heat waves are the so-called urban heat islands. MWC is a local climatic phenomenon consisting of the occurrence of higher air temperatures in a city than in peripheral areas. It arises from the accumulation of a large amount of surface made of artificial materials (such as concrete or asphalt) that absorb solar radiation. Insufficient greenery and reduced humidity contribute to the formation of urban heat islands. Another factor that promotes the formation of MWC is anthropogenic heat produced by heating and industrial appliances and car traffic.</p>
<p>How does climate change affect the well-being of urban dwellers? Urban heat islands increase the thermal stress on the body. Research shows that MWCs have an impact on the incidence of heat stroke and exacerbate chronic respiratory and cardiovascular disease. This is especially true for seniors, but also for the disabled and socially excluded.</p>
<p>It is the impact of climate change on human health and quality of life in urban areas that is the main reason for the LIFE Tree Check project. Local and regional governments face a huge challenge in adapting the urban fabric to climate change.</p>
<p>Specialists in research, analysis and environmental consultancy are actively participating in this international project and are trying to promote more and more adaptation activities. Adapting cities to climate change is a process made up of many projects aimed at mitigating the negative impacts of climate change. Among such solutions, first of all, it is worth mentioning <strong>development of blue and green infrastructure</strong> and <strong>raising public awareness of climate change</strong>† Thank you <strong>Boom Check App</strong> and <strong>Tree Check Pro software</strong> a common goal can be achieved – to prevent and minimize the phenomenon of the urban heat island.</p>

Currently, the managers face many challenges. One is to find a way to ensure the safety of the residents. Wałbrzych is the first Polish city where adaptation measures under the LIFE Tree Check project have been carried out. The plan drawn up by us is repeatable, solutions can also be applied in other places. It is a hint to decision makers about what to do to make Polish cities friendly to residents.
