This year alone, the shores of the Masurian Lakes were destroyed 100 times

On Wednesday, on Wednesday, representatives of Polish waters met with the voivode Warmia and Mazury, Artur Chojecki, local government officials, the police, fishermen’s guards, construction supervision and conservation services – VIEP and RDOS.

Devastation almost every day

The announcement after this meeting stated that employees of the Regional Water Board in Białystok observe violations of the banks of rivers and lakes during excursions almost every day. They also receive calls from concerned residents who report places where the coastline has been destroyed. Polish Waters declares that every report of this type is checked in the field. If it turns out that there has been a bank breach, the case will be referred to the police.

– We cannot allow our beautiful Masuria to be destroyed. It is unacceptable and against the law to interfere with nature. This year alone, we have recorded more than 100 cases of illegal bridge construction, access to lakes or reed felling. Irresponsibility and stupidity have irreversible consequences for nature – said Przemysław Daca, president of Polish waters.

Illegal works usually consist of dredging lakes, destroying coastal vegetation, mainly clearing reeds and trees above the water, building piers and strengthening the banks. Obtaining a water permit is required for this type of activity. Damage to or damage to the banks of inland waterways is punishable by a fine, restriction of freedom or a maximum of one year in prison.

Destruction of reeds

As an example of such illegal activities, Wojnowo was mentioned, where the coastline of the Krutynia River and part of the reed beds were destroyed. This happened in the Masurian Landscape Park, in protected areas of Natura 2000. In the same town, a few hundred meters away, workers from the Polish waters in Giżycko found work dredging the channel leading to the Krutynia River, which also includes the coastline of the river and part of it.

According to Polish Waters, works in the city of Szymonka are still ongoing, despite the report to law enforcement authorities of illegal works on the construction of the marina. The port was connected to Lake Jagodne by a canal and the command in Giżycko was notified of its illegal execution in March 2021.

– Despite the ongoing proceedings, the owner of the plot continues to work without permissions and permits, both on his plot and in the lake – mentioned in the release.

Sentences have been passed on

Another example is the massive destruction of the shore of Zelwążek Lake at Mikołajki, where some of the aquatic plants, including several dozen trees that have been illegally felled, have been removed over a length of about 1 km.

According to the Polish Waters, many cases have already been convicted and the perpetrators have been fined. For example, a fine of 10, 20 and 10 thousand. the fine was imposed by the court in Pisz on three men for destroying the shore of Lake Roś. They covered the coastal zone with rubble and sand to create a wild beach. One of them also illegally dredged the bottom of the lake.

In turn, the fine of 2,000 A fine of PLN was imposed by the court in Ełk on a man who ordered earthworks in the area of Lake Woszczele, without the required water permit. The man built a gravel road, which created a breach in the lake shore.

– It happens that penalties and small fines are included in the cost of illegal, often million-dollar, work carried out on the banks of lakes and rivers. There are also cases where the law enforcement agencies deal with the illegal practice of destroying the natural environment without due consideration, Polish waters said.

One of the examples was the destruction of the shore of the Wierzbińskie Lake, which consisted of deepening the bottom of the lake, removing the reeds and roots on an area of 380 m² and the destruction of reed beds on an area of 150 m² by covering the lake with dredging material.

According to the announcement, the police station in Orzysz has made a decision to discontinue the investigation in this case, “for lack of characteristics of a prohibited act”, which was approved by the beeping prosecutor’s office.

Massive destruction

As the Polish waters reminded, any undue human interference with the shoreline can contribute to the deterioration of water quality and accelerate the degradation of the lake and its eutrophication.

When the rushes are removed, the potential breeding grounds of many bird species and the habitats of other animals are destroyed.

The root system of the coastal vegetation serves as a natural reinforcement of the banks of water reservoirs. The coastal zone, which is characterized by a variety of plant species, affects the quality of the water.

– It should be remembered that the destruction of the natural environment is often irreversible and is currently occurring on a large scale. Therefore, there is no permission from the Polish waters for the destruction of the Masurian landscape! Only concerted work to protect waters from destruction can deliver tangible results – the statement said after Wednesday’s meeting.

According to Polish Waters, the destruction of lake shores in most cases occurs within the boundaries of established forms of conservation.
