We talk to experts about effective methods to control rodents on a farm. How to protect the farm from the intrusion of mice and rats? And what to do if the rodents are already there? Poison, deratization stations, professional help from DDD – what to choose?

Mice and rats carry serious diseases

Maciej Nowaczyk of Dezino explains that rodents cause serious economic losses in stables by devouring food and young animals and destroying equipment and appliances. Rats, despite satisfying their hunger, nibble on all objects they encounter, such as thresholds, doors, windows, trying to open their way in.

– However, the most disturbing phenomenon concerning rodents is their dangerous role in the transmission of infectious diseases of an epidemic nature, which threaten human health and life. Mice and rats are responsible for the spread of rabies, salmonellosis, bird flu, ASF and more† In connection with the above, it is necessary to maintain a good technical condition of the stables, to ensure “rodent resistance” and to take care of the area around the facilities, so as not to create favorable conditions for the presence of rodents, for example: mess, uncut grass – explains Dezino’s Maciej Nowaczyk.

On farms, as Maciej Nowaczyk of Dezino argues, regular rodent control actions should also be carried out, consisting of laying poison in special rat feeders, which should be placed around buildings at a distance of about 5-15 m from each other, fixed to the ground and well marked

– Of the preparations available on the market, the best for this purpose are poisons in the form of a paste or wax blocks. Due to the difficulties that may arise during the eradication campaign, as well as the danger associated with the use of poisons, it is recommended to outsource the above activities to qualified deratization companies – says Maciej Nowaczyk, the Dezino company.

Mice and rats – what to do to prevent them from appearing on farms?

As Karol Skoczylas, the owner of Termit, points out, prophylaxis is the foundation of pest control. The main ones are scarcity of facilities, cleanliness and limitation of free-standing food, especially water, that is, creating conditions that would make them unfavorable for the rodents that settle in our area.

– The priority is to drain water into the ponds, to ensure that the water does not remain in the outdoor area, e.g. puddles after rain, etc. It should be remembered that rodents have to use a water well several times a day and near water. If rodents make their home in our area, deratization is necessary. Quick action will eliminate pests – explains Karol Skoczylas from the company Termit.

Why is it worth asking DDD for help with rodent control?

When mice and rats show up on the farm, it pays to work with a professional rat extermination company.

– Such a company will secure the area by installing deratization equipment. Ideally, it should adopt integrated IPM methods. In order for the rodent to not rebuild its numbers, regular inspection is necessary (replacement of poison, cleaning of devices, removal of rodents, documentation, analysis / trends, etc.), control by this company – explains Karol Skoczylas of term.

Can I perform deratization monitoring myself?

– Yes, as long as we have the right knowledge. The problem could also be the change in regulations for the sale of rodenticides/poisons. These changes made the poisons available in stores weaker than those from professional rat control companies. Once the active ingredients were 0.05 g/kg, it is now 0.025 g/kg, which is twice as weak, which can be produced by resistant rodent herds. That’s why it pays to partner with a professional DDD company like ours – convinces Karol Skoczylas of the company Termit.

Poison for mice and rats in paste, cubes and granules

Adam Waszkiewicz, Product Manager, Can Agri encourages you to look for suitable preparations containing lethal substances.

– Products recommended by Can Agri include EXTRAT – brodifacoum paste for rats and mice 3 kg. It’s a strong blue bait on rats, mice and other large rodents. Its effectiveness allows you to save money for rat extermination and shorten the whole process. The high content of brodifacoum gives a lethal effect, even after a single consumption. The venom in the form of a paste, thanks to its high fat and sugar content and carefully selected aromas, attracts rodents and is eaten very eagerly, even if they have other food in addition – explains Adam Waszkiewicz, product manager at Can Agri.

Deratization stations also fulfill their function very well on farms.

– We recommend the ALPHA deratization station, 95 x 105 x 240 mm, mice and rats. It is made of a solid, impact-resistant and weather-resistant plastic. It can be locked to keep the bait away from children and pets. Applying the bait in paste, cubes and pellets is simple and convenient. It is the station most often chosen by our customers – explains Adam Waszkiewicz, product manager at Can Agri.

An effective bait for mice and rats – what should it be characterized with?

Urszula Piwońska, Head of the Agro-Trade Research and Development Department, states that the effectiveness of the preparation is mainly determined by its composition.

– Our preparation: Murin Forte Granulat is an effective solution for the control of rodents. This preparation is very popular and universal and can be used under various conditions. A well-selected composition, based on grain products and excellent flavors and fragrances, makes Murin Forte Granulat very effective in the control of rats and mice. – emphasizes Urszula Piwońska of Agro-Trade.

The attractants and flavors used guarantee a very long attraction of the bait for rodents and meet the bite needs of rodents. In addition, this preparation contains denatonium benzoate – a bitter compound that prevents accidental ingestion.

– Importantly, it has a slightly toxic effect on dogs, cats, pigs, ruminants and acts with a delay and does not cause painful agonal disorders. In addition, it does not arouse suspicion in rodents. It is also very effective, because it stops blood clotting with a single intake – says Urszula Piwońska of Agro-Trade.

How to apply the preparation?

– The bait should be placed in the poison stations used for deratization treatments. Place the stations in places frequented by mice and rats, in dens, along their corridors and especially along walls. You need to refill your bait regularly. Dose in rats: 60-100 g Dose in mice: 40 g. Available packaging: 1 kg, 5 kg, 10 kg, 20 kg – says Urszula Piwońska, Head of the Department of Agro-Trade Research and Development.
